On Bowser’s xray late last month the radiologist found one met.  Today would have been our 6th carbo chemo treatment – but instead we met with our NEVOG oncologist Dr. R and decided to try metronomics. But our other dilemna is a severe ear infection that we have been treating for almost 2 months.  So we have decided to delay the start of metronomics for a few weeks and see if we can use some bigger guns to get rid of this ear infection. Then we will x-ray again and see if there has been any change in or additon to the lung mets.  I hope we are doing the right thing – I would just like Bowser to get some comfort from this ear infection.  Otherwise Bowser is doing fantastic.  He is so fast on those 3 leggs.

 

 

 

What a difference a month makes  — just 4 short weeks ago we were on our way to the emergency clinic with Bowser to leave him there for the nite for post op care.  The past 4 weeks have had their highs and lows for sure.  Coaxing Bowser to eat was a huge challenge – canned, cooked, mixed, not mixed – you name it we tried it all.   And it was in his own time that he went back to his kibble and was happiest when he ate with the rest of  his pack.  5 other bassets who have been the best around him.  Then the leaking from the incision site – on one leaking occasion I was in the x-pen with Bowser crying and waiting for our wonderful vet to make a Saturday nite house call.  We were happy to learn it was just seroma leaking and not frankenstein blood.  The stitches are out and our bloodwork looks good.  This Friday we head back to NEVOG for our second chemo treatment.  Bowser is 99.999% back to normal.  Vocal and silly – playing with his favorite toys and lovable as ever.  We are so thankful that we found the tripawds website.  Even though we don’t post often their is such a feeling of support that helps us thru the days.

 

Yesterday I went to NEVOG (New England Veterinary Oncology Group) for my first carboplatin chemo treatment.  Everybody wanted to pet me and love on me.  My mom made  me wear these clothes to keep me warm – but I think I look like the cookie monster.  It was a 2 hour trip each way yesterday so I was really pooped when we got home – we live in the lakes region of New Hampshire and got home before the snow started.   That’s Katie in the picture with me  – she was with me during surgery. She is a great animal nurse.  I am eleven days post amputation and doing well.

This picture was taken of me this a.m. Not even one day post op. I spent the nite at the emergency clinic – with a morphine drip for pain. I did great. I went for a walk outside and pottied. My mom and Katie (mom’s 2-legger) picked me up this a.m. and took me back to my regular clinic to spend the day with Dr Rich. I guess he needed some company. I ate, pottied, took my medicine. My blood work looks good. Also taking my oral pain meds. So since my mom is very sick I went home with Katie tonite – she is an animal nurse and was with me in surgery so she will take care of me tonite so my mom can get better from her cold. The tumor had really grown since we xrayed it the first time on Dec 27. Nearly the size of a softball.

My name is Bowser but those who know and love me call me Tall boy. You see I am a six year old purebred long legged basset hound. Most of the basset hounds you meet are those short low riders whose legs are short and stumpy.  But not me!!! I was gifted with long legs and a wonderful disposition. But just a few weeks ago I and my food slaves learned that I have osteosarcoma in my rear left leg. The tumor is about the size of a plum.  My amputation surgery is scheduled for monday January 16.  I have been not putting any weight on my bad leg for the past week so I am ready to get rid of this bad wing and get on with my life as a three legged wonder.
